The 26 qualities of a pure devotee of God or Krishna

by Haripada dasa

1-  He's always kind to everyone.  People suffer from lack of awareness of God or Krishna, and people have forgotten that God or Krishna's devotee try to distribute Krishna Consciousness to people without discriminating against anyone.   The Krishna devotee is even kind to their enemy such as when Durvasa muni
offended Ambarisa Maharaja, and the king prayed to Krishna due to his being wise.   When Durvasa muni went to the lotus feet of Maharaja Ambarisa asking forgiveness for his offenses and said, now I have recognized the devotees of God, though I have offended you, you nevertheless have prayed for my good fortune.
2-  He never seeks quarrels.  Srila Prabhupada bought land in Mumbai from Mr. Nair, this person was very powerful, president of two newspapers, president of the supreme justice, etc. ..  Mr. Nair had defrauded the C. Company, took away the money and the land, now he wanted to do the same with Srila Prabhupada, but came out that it backfired, for having done so many offenses to Srila Prabhupada he soon died.  It is said in the book of Krishna in relation to demons Kamsa because of offenses he reduced his life, lost bodily luster, etc ...
3-  His interest is in the essence of life, which is spiritual, that's what meant by paramahansa or the great swan, the swan has a quality that a mixture of water and milk, will leave the milk and will take water or spiritual means in the service of Krishna or God.  Things to use in the service of Krishna are spiritualized.
4-  He is equal to everyone.  That comes the verse of the Bhagavad, Gita Pandit darsinaha sama: the wise humble virtue of true knowledge sees with equal vision a learned brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog eater.
5-  No one can find fault with him, Srila Prabhupada often said that materialists criticize the devotees because of envy, people called them annoying.  Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Prabhupada said that one who is always in use to criticize others, they will never prosper.
6-
His Mind is magnanimous.  St. Teresa of Avila in Spain was saying that the mind is the crazy house, if you go down the street and you meet a madman who has escaped from the asylum and begins to say crazy things, you who will, as thou knowest, in the same way our mind is always telling us nonsense, and you have to ignore it.  When our mind is purified devotion tells us things.  There is where you have to pay attention, and I advise you to read the mana siksa or preaching by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, it is pure nectar.
7-  Your mind is always pure, ceto
darpanam marjanam, when you are chanting the Hare Krishna maha mantra which will purify the mind of all material contamination.
In relation to the mind.....  In Spain there was a saint called Saint Teresa of Avila, she used to say,  "The mind is the crazy house."   She likened the body to a house, and said the mind is always telling us nonsense with crazy thoughts.  In the preface to the Upadeshamrita or nectar of instruction Srila Prabhupada says, "The first duty in all spiritual matters is to control the mind and senses. Unless one controls his mind and senses, you can not move anything or make any advancement in
spiritual life."  The Bhagavad Gita verse 6.34 - 35 reads,  "For the mind is restless, turbulent, obstinate and very strong, O Krishna, and to subdue it, I think, is more difficult than controlling the wind.  The Lord Sri Krishna said: Oh, thou son of Kunti, mighty-armed, to curb the restless mind is undoubtedly very difficult to do, but it is possible by suitable practice and by detachment."  And in the purport Srila Prabhupada says that by detaching the mind from activities not devoted to the Lord, it becomes very easy to learn vairagya. Vairagya means detachment from matter and to make the mind engaged in the spirit. Impersonal spiritual Detachment is more difficult to be adhered to because the mind is lacking in the activities of Krsna.  This is practical, because by hearing about Krsna, one automatically adheres to the Supreme Spirit.  This attachment is called, spiritual satisfaction.  And Srila Prabhupada in the same meaning instructs us that it is like curing a disease by expert treatment and proper diet.  Accordingly, the hearing of the transcendental activities of Lord Krishna is the expert treatment for thealienated mind, and consumption of food that has been offered to Krishna is the right diet for the suffering patient.  Such treatment is the process of Krishna consciousness.
I want to share a point from a lecture by Srila Prabhupada given by Bhaktisiddhanta Goswami in Calcutta on 12-7-1936 entitled 'Evil Mind'. This evil mind, which can not be trusted, must be beaten with a broom every morning with the warning: Do not be anxious to find fault with others, or declare yourself as a bhakta really sincere and authentic which certainly you are not.  There is also a teaching in the saying: A man who is use to criticize the behavior of others, never prospers.  Let others do what they want, better to rather find fault with my own mind and think like the Vaishnava mahajanas who sang, "Always busy ... and without virtue I am, always lamenting to see the displeasures of others and dont enjoy seeing the grief, problems and concerns of others." We must always remember this song and occupy our minds constantly in Hari-bhajan.

We should not run around attacking other deterrent policies, such behavior is appropriate only for misleading people, and not for preachers.
In connection with the issue, there are very powerful instructions in Srimad Bhagavatam 5.11.17. The devotee Jada Bharata Rahugana instructs the king, "That mind out of control is the greatest enemy of the living entity.  If we are not careful with it and give it a chance, it will become increasingly more powerful and get to beat us. Though not real, it is very powerful, and covers the constitutional position of the soul.  O King, please, try to beat that mind with
the weapon of service to the lotus feet of the spiritual master and the Supreme Personality of Godhead.  Put all your effort into it." And in the purport Srila Prabhupada says that there is a weapon by which it is very easy to beat the mind: ignore it.  Conclusion: We recommend that you read the Sri Mana Siksa.  The instructions to the mind by Srila Raghunatha Dasa Goswami, here I will show verse 1.  Oh, my dear sister, my silly mind!  Having fastened your feet, humbly gold with sweet words.  Please give up all pride and quickly develop sublime and incessant rati, or attachment to Sri Gurudeva, Sri Vraja Dhama, residents of Vraja, the Vaisnavas, the brahmanas, your diksa mantras, the holy names of the Supreme Lord, and the refuge of Kisora-Kisori, Sri Sri Radha-Krsna, the eternally youthful divine couple of Vraja.

8-  His mind is always clear.  When we never forget the pure mind of Srila Prabhupada or Krishna/God and everything to do with their officers we are making progress.
9-  His mind is always devoid of material obsessions.  Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura in his mana siksa says that the root of all undesirable things is there in our hearts and is that you want respect from others.  Srila Prabhupada said to not demand respect, but inspire respect.
10-  He is a benefactor to all living entities.  Srila Rupa Gosvami
glorified Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu  saying that he was the biggest benefactor that he was giving Krishna consciousness or pure love of God to everyone.  And our Srila Prabhupada is the commander in chief of the spiritual forces of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.  Please do not see Srila Prabhupada as the guru of a few people, no, that's a big mistake.   We see Srila Prabhupada as the guru jagat-guru of the universe.
11-  He is peaceful.   A person can be peaceful when he is free from material desires.   I remember a song from a bona fide spiritual master Acharya saying that I will have achieved symptom mercy of Sri Nityananda is that I will be free from material desires and when the Lord Nrisimhadeva Prahlada Maharaja told him to ask a boon, he asked that the bottom of my heart that I have no material desires.
12-  He is always given to Krishna, or God.  In my blog are all songs saranagati or surrender to Almighty God by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura in Chintamani Harinam.  In Chapter thirteen is said that the six principles of Krishna Consciousness of God are: 1-  To favor to accept everything favorable to the service of the Lord.  2-  To reject whatever is unfavorable.  3-  Be convinced that Lord Krishna will always protect.  4-  Depend completely on Krishna for everything. 5-  Always feel meek and humble.   And...  6-  Surrendered to the lotus feet of Lord Krishna.
13-  He has no material desires.  Srila Prabhupada was saying that he had wished for a temple and now the temple was visited by millions of people.  These are the wishes of the devotees.  Srila Prabhupada said that you have only to wish and Krishna will arrange.... the only way to subdue material desires is to have spiritual desires and always make plans to please Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga.
14-  He's very humble.  Srila Krishna das Kaviraj Gosvami says in the Chaitanya Charitamrita he is lower than worms in the stool, and is more sinful than Jagai and Madhai.... that's humility.  In the year 1972 during Kartika vrata Srila Prabhupada said in Radha Damodara temple in Vrindavan that we must always be ready to offer respect not only the devotees, but everyone because every living entity is originally a devotee of Krishna, but circumstantially to be covered by maya he is acting like a demon but his original nature is that of a devotee of Krishna.  That is real humility.
15-  He is always fixed in purpose.  From faith to love of God there are 9 states of perfection, and nistha or be fixed is the fifth.  The 1st is the faith, the 2nd is the association of devotees, the 3rd is the spiritual initiation, 4th is cleaning the heart of undesirable things, the 5th is to be fixed up, the 6th is feeling a pleasure in devotional service, 7th is to feel an attachment, 8th is feeling spiritual emotions to render devotional service and 9th is the goal of life-- ananda or prema,  mahan pumarto prema, pure love of God or Krishna.
16-  He has triumphed over the six material qualities of lust, anger, greed, envy, madness and illusion.  In the Srimad Bhagavatam
7.9.1, it is said that the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His devotee know how to properly employ lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride and envy.  Lust becomes spiritualized when we use all for service of Krishna and the example of this are the gopis of Vrindavan.  Anger becomes spiritualized when used for Krishna to defend against enemies, and the example is Arjuna and Hanuman.   The greed becomes spiritualized when we use it to buy a ticket back home back to Godhead.  I remember a meaning Srila Prabhupada shares, it is that the desire to go to Krishna is not a bad desire.   To shake the mind or the illusion we use much sankirtan.  Once I said to a man hey you look like a very good person and he immediately pulled out his wallet and gave me 100 dollar donation.  Srila Prabhupada said that the words of the spiritual master are the pride of the disciple, and so here we can see pride spiritualized.   When we become proud of our acharyas or teachers of spiritual subjects that forms our disciplic succession!  Those great personalities!  They come from the spiritual world and we should not imitate the acharyas but follow in their footsteps.  Everyone should remember to read in the Nectar of Devotion that the mahabhagavata devotee is raganuga, but to set an example to the neophytes, acts as a neophyte.   And envy too...   I remember the rememberence of Srila Prabhupada in the year 1996.  There the BBT of Spain promised before the Deities and 500 devotees that they would print the Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita.  There are very small countries that have all the books of Srila Prabhupada translated and printed in their languages.... that is transcendental envy.
17-  He does not eat more than you need.  Srila Prabhupada said that if you eat more, you need to sleep more, and if you sleep more than 6 hours a day you are influenced by ignorance.   Most Hindus are skinny but have an
inconceivable amount of energy .
18-  He is always prudent.  In the Sriman Bhagavatam, ninth Chapter part 16, says that Parasurama's father Jamadagni told his youngest son Parasurama to kill his brothers, for having disobeyed his order and his mother for being mentally unfaithful.  Lord Parasurama knowing the power of his father, a master in the art of meditation and austerity, immediately killed his mother and brothers.   Jamadagni, the son of Satyavati was very pleased with Parasurama and asked him to ask a blessing
and with this Lord Parasurama asked that his mother and  brothers to live again.  That's the blessing he got.   And when Srila Prabhupada was asked the meaning of this he said that no matter if we or Kartavyryarjuna, Jamadagni or Parasurama , or whatever, we must act with great prudence and sagacity, otherwise we will have to suffer the results of sinful activities.  That is the lesson we get from the Vedic scriptures.
19-  He is always respectful of others.  Srila Gaura
Kisora das babaji said that all living beings are worthy of my worship.
20-  He commands respect for himself.   Srila Prabhupada said that we should not demand respect from others, but command respect by our acts.
21-  He is serious.  It is said that a devotee of Krishna is trancendentally serious and it is very difficult to know their plans and their mentality.   Even the smartest people are confused when they see the words, activities and thoughts of pure devotees of God.
22-  He is merciful.  The symptom of a merciful person is that he is very tolerant.
23-  He is friendly.  A nickname Yudisthir Maharaja had is that he never created any enemy because the devotee of God/Krishna is so friendly that they even pray to God for his enemies.  Srila Visvanatha Cakravatti Thakura says that's the sign of a paramahansa-- wishing well even to your enemy.
24-  He's poetic.  Srila Prabhupada says in a class that it is not good just writing poetry, but to write spiritual literature.
25-  He is skilled.  I remember in the Nectar of Devotion which says that the skilled person is one that tries to do the hardest thing.  The hardest thing to do in this world is turning people into devotees of Krishna.  Once Srila Prabhupada asked the great saints.  Srila Prabhupada said, you see all these people...  before they were crows, but now are
swans, I convert crows into swans.  Srila Prabhupada said that only a pure devotee can make others pure devotees and the pseudo devotee can not.   Worldly people envy the pure devotee of Krishna seeing him as an expert on everything.
26-  He is quiet.   Srila Prabhupada said that the silent person is one who sings 24 hours a day Hare Krishna and preaches the glories of the Lord.
