Mediation between ISKCON Bangalore & ISKCON Mumbai

by Usha Gururaj

Please find attached a set of documents to update the devotee community re. on the progress of the ongoing mediation. These documents consist of correspondence between between Madhu Pandit Prabhu , the GBC Bureau and the ISKCON GBC :
Justice Raveendran (the retired Supreme court justice who was appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee the present management at HK Hill, by the ISKCON Society of Karnataka a year ago) took an initiative to bring about an out of court settlement between two parties thru several mediation sittings.
The Bangalore group offered to bring the property in dispute in the court, which is the Hare Krishna Hill temple under the ownership of ISKCON registered in Mumbai if Bureau assured before the Supreme Court that the rtvik system of initiation practiced now will be the only system to continue and the preaching that Srila Prabhupada is guru of everyone in this temple will also continue. Then we went further to offer all the group properties, worth about 500 million dollars, about 20 temples in India to ISKCON registered in Mumbai with same condition on initiation.

To avoid court battles, they even offered that Madhu Pandit Dasa, Chanchalapathi Dasa and Jai Chaitanya Dasa will be out of management of the Hare Krishna Hill temple, which is disputed before the court. The Bureau had its meeting with GBC on March 9, 2013 and rejected the condition on initiation and rejected the settlement offer. The Bureau’s foul cries that rtvik is just an excuse for Sri Madhu Pandit Dasa’s plan to grab properties now stands exposed as just mud slinging tactic. If they really believed this to be the case, why don’t they take the offer that would have included Madhu Pandit’s offer?
The attached documents should be read in the following time sequence:
  1. Letter dated Jan 25th, 2013 to Justice Raveendran
  2. Final Offer of Madhu Pandit Das to GBC and Bureau March 5th, 2013
  3. Final Synopsis offered to GBC by MPD on March 5th, 2013
  4. GBC cover letter March 9th, 2013
  5. GBC statement Final March 9th,2013
  6. Reply to GBC and Bureau March 14th, 2013
  7. Final letter to Justice Raveendran March 22nd, 2013

Prabhupadanugas Gaura Purnima Festival report 2013-Sedro Woolley Wa USA

Hare Krsna to all
Pranams
All glories to Srila Prabhupada and
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu

We  here at Sri Sri Gaura Nitai Mandir celebrated the festival of Gaura Purnima today, and as
you can see from the photos, it was very nice and many devotees attended.
Fresh fragrant flowers from spring like forsythia, plum blossums, and daffodils graced Lord Gaurangas
nicely decorated altar.
We offered 111 different foodstuffs for the Lords pleasure. This included but was not
limited to- two dozen fortune cookies, gulab jamuns, 30 different types of burfy, Gauranga potatoes,
rice, various subjis, dried and fresh fruits, sweet rice, cawly and eggplant pakoras, three kinds
of chutney-well, you get the picture.

We began by  offering arotik, then did the bhajan Parama Karuna, read the purport by
Srila Prabhupada, and then gave a short class on this song.

We next did Abhisek for three of our Deities, everybody took part bathing the
Lords in pancamrta substances. Then Anubhavananda read one of his poems.
Next was a very amusing play of puppets put on by Kanhaiya das and his kids.
The play, taken from Caitanya mangala, was about the episode in Vaikuntha between Lord Krsna and His queen Sri Rukmini devi along with Narada Muni, all of which precipitated the advent of
Gauranga, who was first seen at this time.

This was followed by-- the FEAST !.

Afterwards, the devotees mingled for a bit, then we did some more kirtans, until
finally everyone had to leave for their respective ashrams. All things considered,
I think everyone had a lot of fun, and most importantly--this Hare Krsna Movement
as it was originally taught by Srila Prabhupada, is STILL going on, despite all that
happened in the past!!!

All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu,
the most merciful of all incarnations!!!

Damaghosa das/ Daria Devi dasi

Bhakta Andy merrily blowing away on his Shenai--I love it!!
Chanting, dancing and feasting-what could be easier?

These two Vaisnava parents have done a wonderful job raising their three children, who all
chant at least 16 rounds a day, and attend mongol arotik every day in their ashram

The Fake GBC: BUTCHERS of ISKCON - Part 2

Bhagavad-gita 4.19 - Transcendental Knowledge
Because the person in Krishna consciousness is devoid of all kinds of sense-gratificatory propensities, it is to be understood that he has burned up the reactions of his work by perfect knowledge of his constitutional position as the eternal servitor of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Nectar of Instruction 5
A madhyama-adhikari has received SPIRITUAL INITIATION from the spiritual master and has been FULLY ENGAGED BY HIM IN THE TRANSCENDENTAL LOVING SERVICE OF THE LORD.

Antya 4.192 - Sanatana Gosvami Visits the Lord at Jagannatha Puri
DIKSA-KALE bhakta kare atma-samarpana
sei-kale krsna tare kare atma-sama
“AT THE TIME OF INITIATION, when a devotee fully surrenders unto the service of the Lord, Krishna accepts him to be as good as Himself.
Antya 4.193 - Sanatana Gosvami Visits the Lord at Jagannatha Puri
“When the devotee’s body is thus transformed into spiritual existence, the devotee, in that transcendental body, renders service to the lotus feet of the Lord.

Antya 4.194 - Sanatana Gosvami Visits the Lord at Jagannatha Puri
”The living entity who is subjected to birth and death, when he gives up all material activities dedicating his life to Me for executing My order, and thus acts according to My direction, at that time he reaches the platform OF IMMORTALITY, AND BECOMES FIT TO ENJOY THE SPIRITUAL BLISS OF EXCHANGE OF LOVING MELLOWS WITH ME.”

Antya 4.194 - Sanatana Gosvami Visits the Lord at Jagannatha Puri
This is a quotation from Srimad-Bhagavatam (11.29.34). At the time of initiation, a devotee gives up all his material conceptions. THEREFORE, BEING IN TOUCH WITH THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, HE IS SITUATED ON THE TRANSCENDENTAL PLATFORM. THUS HAVING ATTAINED KNOWLEDGE AND THE SPIRITUAL PLATFORM, HE ALWAYS ENGAGES IN THE SERVICE OF THE SPIRITUAL BODY OF KRISHNA. When one is freed from material connections in this way, his body immediately becomes spiritual, and Krishna accepts His service. However, Krishna does not accept anything from a person with a material conception of life.

Note: ONLY a Mahabhagavata CAN TRANSFER Krishna in another's heart: DIKSHA
your constitutional position ETERNAL SERVITIOR (SVARUPA) IS REVEALED when YOU SEE Krishna. When it is dark you can NOT see who YOU are but when SUN comes out YOU can SEE who YOU are.

Srimad Bhagavatam 10.2.18 -
Prayers by the Demigods for Lord Krishna in the Womb
As indicated here by the word manastah, the Supreme Personality of Godhead was TRANSFERRED from the core of Vasudeva’s mind or heart to the core of the heart of Devaki. We should note carefully that the Lord was transferred to Devaki not by the ordinary way for a human being, BUT BY DIKSHA, INITIATION. THUS THE IMPORTANCE OF INITIATION IS MENTIONED HERE. UNLESS ONE IS INITIATED BY THE RIGHT PERSON, WHO ALWAYS CARRIES WITHIN HIS HEART THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD, ONE CANNOT ACQUIRE THE POWER TO CARRY THE SUPREME GODHEAD WITHIN THE CORE OF ONE’S OWN HEART.
SB 4.29.79 - Talks Between Narada and King Pracinabarhi
SELF-REALIZATION, UNDERSTANDING ONESELF AS BRAHMAN, OR SPIRIT SOUL, IS VERY DIFFICULT IN THE MATERIAL CONDITION. However, if we accept the devotional service of the Lord, the Lord will gradually reveal Himself. In this way the progressive devotee will gradually realize his spiritual position. We cannot see anything in the darkness of night, not even our own selves, but when there is sunshine we can see not only the sun but everything within the world as well.

Lectures, April 27, 1974, Hyderabad
So actually, this is the problem of living entities. That knowledge can be acquired in the human form of life and it can be solved, not that simply we get the knowledge, but it can be solved. So therefore, real business of human life, to understand oneself, that is called self-realization, brahma-bhuta, and find out the remedy and act accordingly. That is the mission of human life. Not like to dance like cats and dogs with a nice dress. That is not human life. This is the subject matter of Bhagavad-gita, our whole Vedic instruction. Vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyah. This is God consciousness, Krishna consciousness, or self-realization. SELF-REALIZATION MEANS EITHER YOU SEE YOURSELF OR SEE THE SUPREME LORD, EITHER WAY. BUT WITHOUT SEEING THE SUPREME LORD, YOU CANNOT SEE YOURSELF. Just like without seeing the sun in the darkness… Just like it is now night. There is no sun. So I cannot see also. In darkness I cannot see also myself. But when there is sun in the morning, I can see the sun and I can see myself also. This is the theory. So if we want to understand ourselves rightly, that “I am spirit soul,” aham brahmasmi, then we must take to Krishna consciousness.

Letter: Vilasavigraha, January 22, 1969
IN REGARD TO YOUR NEXT QUESTION, SELF REALIZATION MEANS GOD REALIZATION, AND GOD REALIZATION MEANS SELF REALIZATION. JUST LIKE TO SEE THE SUN MEANS TO SEE ONESELF, AND TO SEE ONESELF MEANS TO SEE THE SUN. SELF REALIZATION DEPENDS COMPLETELY UPON GOD REALIZATION, OR ELSE IT IS NOT COMPLETE. ONE MUST KNOW HIS RELATIONSHIP TO THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH TO FULLY KNOW HIS POSITION.

Note: Srila Prabhupada gives Divya-jnana (DIKSHA). Divya means TRANSCENDENTAL and Jnana means KNOWLEDGE. Hrde means heart and prokasito means revealed just as in prakasa – manifested Krishna becomes manifest in the heart of the Pure Devotee.

Lectures, July 11, 1976, New York
Prabhupada: Divya-jnana hrde prokasito. What is that divya-jnana? Divya-jnana is that we are all SERVANT OF KRISHNA, and our only business is to serve Krishna. Divya-jnana. This is divya-jnana. It is not difficult at all. Simply we have… We have become servant of so many things -- servant of society, servant of community, servant of country, servant of wife, servant of children, servant of dog and so many. “Now let me become servant of Krishna.” THIS IS DIVYA-JNANA. DIKSA MEANS FROM THIS DIVYA-JNANA. That is di. And ksa means ksapayati, expands.

When at the stage of Madhyama Adhikari one is RECIPIENT of THAT Diksha in the HEART from SRILA PRABHUPADA he becomes a SERVANT OF KRISHNA. He relishes a particular mellow (Rasa) of his relationship with Krishna. This point HE SEES KRISHNA and HIS RELATIONSHIP (svarupa) is established. So it is not so CHEAP to be Diksha guru.

Madhya 8.83 - Talks Between Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Ramananda Raya
The purport in presenting this verse necessitates explaining the comparative positions of the transcendental mellows known as SANTA, DASYA, SAKHYA, VATSALYA AND MADHURYA. All these rasas, or mellows, are situated on the TRANSCENDENTAL PLATFORM. Pure devotees take shelter of one of them and thus progress in spiritual life. ACTUALLY ONE CAN TAKE SHELTER OF SUCH SPIRITUAL MELLOWS ONLY WHEN ONE IS COMPLETELY UNCONTAMINATED BY MATERIAL ATTACHMENT. WHEN ONE IS COMPLETELY FREE FROM MATERIAL ATTACHMENT, THE FEELINGS OF THE TRANSCENDENTAL MELLOWS ARE AWAKENED IN THE HEART OF THE DEVOTEE. THAT IS SVARUPA-SIDDHI, THE PERFECTION OF ONE’S ETERNAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SUPREME LORD. Svarupa-siddhi, the eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord, may be situated in one of the transcendental mellows.

Note: ONE spiritual master who CAN transfer Krishna in your heart is Maha-Bhagavata. Kanistha is incapable and Madhyama is the RECIPIENT of Diksha. Madhyama is MIDDLE stage so he does NOT give Diksha he is the RECIPIENT of Diksha.

Krishna Book 80 - The Meeting of Lord Krishna with Sudama Brahmana
Our next spiritual master is he who initiates us into transcendental knowledge, and he is to be worshiped as much as I am. The spiritual master may be more than one. The spiritual master who instructs the disciples about spiritual matters is called shiksha-guru, and the spiritual master who initiates the disciple is called diksha-guru. Both of them are My representatives. THERE MAY BE MANY SPIRITUAL MASTERS WHO INSTRUCT, BUT THE INITIATOR SPIRITUAL MASTER IS ONE.

Krishna Book 80 The Meeting of Lord Krishna with Sudama Brahmana
Our next spiritual master is he who initiates us into transcendental knowledge, and he is to be worshiped as much as I am. The spiritual master may be more than one. The spiritual master who instructs the disciples about spiritual matters is called siksa-guru, and the spiritual master who initiates the disciple is called diksha-guru. Both of them are My representatives. There may be many spiritual masters who instruct, but the initiator spiritual master is one.
Note: NON-liberated OFFICIATING ACHARYA can NOT transfer into YOUR heart Krishna. However DIKSHA requires for Krishna to be TRANSFERED TO YOUR HEART in order that YOUR RELATIONSHIP (SVARUPA) is REVEALED: this has been explained in detail:
Reply to Nimai Pandit Prabhu and Rochana das
Note: When Krishna is TRANSFERRED FROM Pure devotees (Srila Prabhupada) HEART to another Pure devotee then there is DIKSHA. Divya jnana revelation of one’s CONSTITUTIONAL position Svarupa is UNDERSTOOD. This may take many many many births — NOT so cheap.
Srimad Bhagavatam 10.2.18 -

Divya-jnana means : Divya TRANSCENDENTAL and Jnana means KNOWLEDGE
So UNLESS one is on TRANSCENDENTAL PLATFORM means Uttama Adhikari (Maha Bhagavata) there can NOT be any question of Transcendental Knowledge of one’s CONSTITUTIONAL POSITION coming FROM him. THIS EFFECTIVLY DISQUALIFIES KANISTHA AND MADHYAM (MIDDLE STAGE) FROM GIVING DIKSHA — AUTOMATICALLY.

Hrde means heart and Prokasito means revealed just as in prakasa – manifested Krishna becomes manifest in the heart of the Pure Devotee.

Vyas Puja Offering 2013 by Gauridasa Pandita Prabhu

Gauridasa Pandita  "I wrote my Vyasapuja offering on my way back from India and I'm ready to send it in"

Dear Srila Prabhupada,
All glories to you always and especially on your most auspicious appearance day.

It's amazing what you have done giving us your 'Matchless Gifts' of love of God. As time goes on it becomes more obvious to more and more devotees and people of the world how special you are and how you made the greatest contribution for the betterment of our lives and the world by giving us Krsna Consciousness; which is the best way to true peace and happiness. You are most qualified to get the Peace Prize and I think you will in time. You are the most important person to ever Grace America and the world with your presence and your presents of Krsna Consciousness.

Everyday, especially in India, thousands of people are flocking to your Temples. In Vrindavan, at your Krsna Balaram Mandir and Samadhi Mandir, all day long every day people come and see you, find out more about you, and honor you more and more. This will continue at least for the rest of the Golden Age of Lord Chaitanya.

Chanting in front of your Samadhi Mandir is one of my favorite things to do. It's enlivening to see so many new people visiting your Samadhi Mandir and Museum, your house and Temple and the Bhaktivedanta Goshala. So many are giving donations and doing devotional service because of you. So many are getting your books and Prasadam!

Your books are everything to you and as you said so many times you are present in your books and available as the guru to all who accept and follow you. Your followers are increasing as time goes by and it will continue to increase everyday throughout this Golden Age of Guru and Gouranga.

When a new book was finished and you examined it very carefully, tears of appreciation and joy came to you. In 1977 you were preparing to leave your body in Vrindavan and were bed ridden. But when a newly printed book came you asked us to turn up the lights, prop you up and get your glasses. You looked at the book cover to cover and smiled broadly even though physically there was pain. You transcended the body with your pure Krsna Consciousness. It was obvious that Krsna was giving you His special Shakti. You fasted for days and weeks but still had great energy and kept preaching and writing all the way. You said if we cooperated and read your books everything would go on nicely.

You fulfilled the Mission of Lord Chaitanya. At an age when most people are retired and weak you started your worldwide preaching. You did amazing things starting with nothing material but everything spiritual. Because you had full faith in the words of your spiritual master and Krsna you were able to do the improbable, with Their help.

You are irreplacable. Attachment to your lotus feet is the perfection that fulfills all desires and are the way to pure devotional service. Those who are naturally attracted to you and accept you as their guru, are the most fortunate souls in creation. You are the main guru for all of us old and new and the duty of all of us is to give you to every fortunate soul.

When I first met you the day I joined, you told me and the other devotees on the Sri Sri Radha Damodar Traveling Sankirtan Party, "You are all very bright-faced and fortunate to come to Lord Chaitanya's Movement. Now that you are fortunate; makes others fortunate. Preach this message of Lord Chaitanya's all over the world." You were so serene looking sitting there and so charming. You were always the most gracious host to all your many guests and made sure all your guests received Prasadam.

Jesus Ki Jaya by Haripada das

Srila Prabhupada often told us that Jesus Christ was a saktyavesa avatara, a very special soul that God sent from the spirit world to do a mission on earth, preaching according to time, place, circumstances and climate. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura also glorifies him in his books.

I've heard that in the Purana Bavisya comes a prophecy of the coming of Jesus and said to the son of God will come and be crucified by the Yavanas or meat eaters. A very interesting thing of the disciples of Jesus who had so much faith, love, devotion and gratitude to the many of them became martyrs sacrificed their lives for him. All faith and Christian hope is based on the second coming of Jesus. In this connection it is very interesting an appointment JOHN 16, 25.

There is said that Jesus said that I have spoken to you in proverbs, but the time will come that you plainly know about the Father. If we look at all the great personalities who have come after Jesus, we will find that the only genuine person, authorized and transparent has taught us that God is Krishna and who has given us the spiritual world is Srila Prabhupada,

Srila Prabhupada I sense, is that is the second coming of Jesus, what do you think of this? Has anyone other than Srila Prabhupada taught us that Krishna is God and that God was always talking about? It is very interesting that Srila Prabhupada said that IF I REALLY SAID WHO I AM you would not believe.

History repeats itself and there is nothing new under the sun, they crucified Jesus and poisoned Srila Prabhupada (Srila Prabhupoada says in the book of conversations in volume 36 on page 367 that are poisoning ME), one might be the question that people act well, the answer is obvious, envy and the desire to please their personal interests and selfish.

I sense that many of us did much service to Jesus and we are continuing that service to Jesus in the form of Srila Prabhupada, and Jesus had many enemies. And Srila Prabhupada also had many disciples who were enemies of Jesus and now continue as enemies of Jesus in the form of Srila Prabhupada. And people like me and others tried to continue our service to Srila Prabhupada so we had to go to Iskcon, by which we mean: that if Srila Prabhupada was poisoned -- that can be done to us.

The question may arise now is: Where are all of those disciples of Jesus who sacrificed their lives for him? The answer to this question is that Srila Prabhupada said that this generation of devotees will not be very good but then better future devotees will come. What do you think of this?. Another point is that leaders  Iskcon of nearly 36 years consciously have been hiding the truth and living a lie, the result is that they and their people now are living full of fear, envy, bigotry and prejudice, while I personally think that it has no good purpose, still I have to give reverence to those bad people. I am filled with happiness and freedom, and I thank God or Krishna and Srila Prabhupada for allowing me to live the truth, the truth shall make you free.

  Regular Rittvik Program

Dear Prabhus,

Dandavats. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I would like to thank Damaghosa Prabhu in encouraging me to hold regular rittvik program here in Vancouver. At first I was hesitant; and I was thinking can I do it? Then he said I know you can do it… that is why I am telling to do it. I remember on two instances Damaghosa Prabhu asked me: “When are you going to do your own program?” He said if you will not do it, then who will do it? Finally by his encouragement and Prabhupada’s mercy we were able to hold two programs successively. Thank you Damaghosa Prabhu for pushing me in carry out this important mission. I know it is an ambitious task especially for a person like me who is working full time 8.5 hours a day... but with your support, I think we can do it

We have submitted last week our application for registration of our society, and in a few days, we will get result from BC government. I would like to run this program legitimately so that ISKCON Vancouver cannot do anything to us. I know for sure they are already monitoring our activities. In fact, during our first program, they phoned us and we just said…. Can you call later….we are about to begin our kirtan.

We are just waiting for the approval and then we will go out on Harinam to distribute original books only and inserted to it is our flyer. I have attached the draft copy of the flyer for your comments, critics, recommendations, addition or deletion. Please send me your feedback.

I think we will be attracting new people to join us as soon as this flyer is out. To me, that is the preferred scenario as supposed to undoing the belief of some of our devotee friends.

Your lowly servant,

Navadvipa Dasa

Hare Krsna Navadveep Prabhu,
Please accept my humble obesiances with all glories to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, to His Dream, to His Mission

I would like to congratulate you and your entire family for this auspicious endeavor. I am quite confident that Srila Prabhupada is very happy with your effort.
Sometimes we would also make plans to join you in your Sankirtan.

===================

The Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra also says, “My dear Lord Kṛṣṇa, my dear Lord Rāma, O energy of the Lord, Hare, kindly engage me in Your service.” Although one may be situated in a lowly position, he can execute devotional service under any circumstance, as stated, ahaituky apratihatā:  “Devotional service cannot be checked by any material condition.” (Bhāg. 1.2.6) Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu also recommended this process:

jñāne prayāsam udapāsya namanta eva
jīvanti san-mukharitāṁ bhavadīya-vārtām
sthāne sthitāḥ śruti-gatāṁ tanu-vāṅ-manobhir
ye prāyaśo ’jita jito ’py asi tais tri-lokyām  (Bhāg. 10.14.3)

One may remain situated in his own place or his own occupational duty and still lend his ear to receive the message of the Lord from realized souls. The Kṛṣṇa conscious movement is based on this principle, and we are opening centers all over the world to give everyone a chance to hear the message of Lord Kṛṣṇa in order to go back home, back to Godhead.

Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful....

Hare Krsna Navadvipa prabhu et all
my obeisances to you and all your good family members
All glories to Srila Prabhupada

Thanks for the letter prabhu and the results of your recent preaching attempts. Lord Krsna and Srila Prabhupada is guiding you, have no fears  or doubts about it. Your former "friends" at iskcon cannot harm you at all if you stick to the principles Srila Prabhupada has given to us. They may bark some, but your transcendental caravan will sweetly and nicely pass on without them, leaving them  back in the material world of kali yuga.

Nice flyer or is that a business card size?

You wont only get new people but some devotees will come out of iskcon there in Vancouver who are somewhat serious and have some brains left in their heads. Like I mentioned to you before, dont overly  and publicly stress the whole ritvik thing at your meetings  as this will most of the time end up in some kind of argument, mostly due to peoples lack of understanding siddhanta. Better to just do kirtan, class, let them hear and see Srila Prabhupada, give them nice prasadam and you will all be in bliss and feel very satisfied!!

If some of them have a brain for philosophy, and really want to understand guru tattva, give them our book Srila Prabhupada Siddhanta and that should convince them. It is easy to understand and follow.
Once the former blind followers of iskcon come regularly and associate with you all, they will  become convinced that this is what they are really looking for-that higher taste which has eluded them for so long
in the halls and walls of iskcon.

keep it up---Hari bol

Dear Navadvipa Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I would like to congratulate you for the preaching program you have started with your good family. No doubt Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krishna will guide you in your endeavor and send you all the assistance and devotees required to make your sincere efforts a success. Just do as Srila Prabhupada did and concentrate on preaching without necessarily having to harp on the Rittvik issue and those who participate will see the difference.

My dandavats to you and Mother Vrajabhumi. Hare Krishna.

ys,

Krishna Prema Das

   As stated in Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.14.58):

                   samasrita ye pada-pallava-plavam
                    mahat-padam punya-yaso-murareh
                 bhavambudhir vatsa-padam param padam
padam padam yad vipadam na tesam

This material world is just like a big ocean. It begins with
Brahmaloka and extends to Patalaloka, and there are many planets, or
islands, in this ocean. Not knowing about devotional service, the
living entity wanders about this ocean, just as a man tries to swim to
reach the shore. Our struggle for existence is similar to this.
Everyone is trying to get out of the ocean of material existence. One
cannot immediately reach the coast, but if one endeavors, he can cross
the ocean by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy.
One may be very eager to
cross this ocean, but he cannot attain success by acting like a
madman. He must swim over the ocean very patiently and intelligently
under the instructions of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu or His
representative. Then, one day, he will reach the shore and return
home, back to Godhead
.
Madhya 16.238    "You should not make yourself a showbottle devotee and become a
false renunciant. For the time being, enjoy the material world in a
befitting way and do not become attached to it."

                               PURPORT

The word markata-vairagya, indicating false renunciation, is very
important in this verse
. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, in
commenting on this word, points out that monkeys make an external show
of renunciation by not accepting clothing and by living naked in the
forest. In this way they consider themselves renunciants, but actually
they are very busy enjoying sense gratification with dozens of female
monkeys. Such renunciation is called markata-vairagye-the renunciation
of a monkey. One cannot be really renounced until one actually becomes
disgusted with material activity and sees it as a stumbling block to
spiritual advancement
. Renunciation should not be phalgu, temporary,
but should exist throughout one's life. Temporary renunciation, or
monkey renunciation, is like the renunciation one feels at a cremation
ground.
When a man takes a dead body to the crematorium, he sometimes
thinks, "This is the final end of the body. Why am I working so hard
day and night?" Such sentiments naturally arise in the mind of any man
who goes to a crematorial ghata. However, as soon as he returns from
the cremation grounds, he again engages in material activity for sense
enjoyment. This is called smasana-vairagya, or markata-vairagya
.
In order to render service to the Lord, one may accept necessary
things. If one lives in this way, he may actually become renounced. In
the Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.2.108), it is said:

                       yavata syat sva-nirvahah
                       svikuryat tavad arthavit
                        adhikye nyunatayam ca
                        cyavate paramarthatah

"The bare necessities of life must be accepted, but one should not
superfluously increase his necessities
. Nor should they be
unnecessarily decreased.
One should simply accept what is necessary to
help one advance spiritually
."
In his Durgama-sangamani, Sri Jiva Gosvami comments that the word
sva-nirvahah actually means sva-sva-bhakti-nirvahah. The experienced
devotee will accept only those material things that will help him
render service to the Lord. In the Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.2.256),
markata-vairagya, or phalgu-vairagya, is explained as follows:

                        prapancikataya buddhya
                       hari-sambandhi-vastunah
                        mumuksubhih parityago
                      vairagyam phalgu kathyate

"Whatever is favorable for the rendering of service to the Lord
should be accepted and should not be rejected as a material thing."
Yukta-vairagya, or befitting renunciation, is thus explained:

                         anasaktasya visayan
                        yatharham upayunjatah
                      nirbandhah krsna-sambandhe
                       yuktam vairagyam ucyate

"Things should be accepted for the Lord's service and not for one's
personal sense gratification. If one accepts something without
attachment and accepts it because it is related to Krsna, one's
renunciation is called yukta-vairagya." Since Krsna is the Absolute
Truth, whatever is accepted for His service is also the Absolute
Truth.
The word markata-vairagya is used by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to
indicate so-called Vaisnavas who dress themselves in loincloths trying
to imitate Srila Rupa Gosvami. Such people carry a beadbag and chant,
but at heart they are always thinking about getting women and money.
Unknown to others, these markata-vairagis maintain women but
externally present themselves as renunciants
. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu
was very much opposed to these markata-vairagis, or pseudo-Vaisnavas.
